As a feminist, I share the conviction that women must be valued for their multifaceted contributions – be it in the home, the workplace, or as integral members of their communities and the global stage. Reflecting on my own journey, particularly as I’ve transitioned into motherhood while pursuing a professional career, has profoundly shaped my perspective. It illuminated the intricate balance between nurturing a family and nurturing professional aspirations, highlighting the importance of appreciating each moment and milestone.
The yearning for women’s elevation isn’t merely an abstract desire; it’s rooted in tangible evidence. Amidst the global challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, countries led by women have demonstrated exceptional resilience and effectiveness in managing crises, Women represent 90% of the frontline healthcare workforce globally, serving as the primary caregivers in patient-facing roles. 1
Empirical evidence from grassroots initiatives further underscores the transformative power of women’s empowerment. Programs like the one at CFTRI in Mysore, providing loans exclusively to women for agricultural equipment, showcase the ripple effect of investing in women. Having worked closely with women in rural communities for decades through IHDUA, I’ve witnessed firsthand how education and financial empowerment certify women to uplift entire families and communities. The potential for women’s leadership isn’t just theoretical – it’s pragmatic and achievable. However, realizing this potential requires a paradigm shift in how women are perceived and supported in various spheres. It entails not merely advocating for equality, but actively promoting and elevating women to positions of influence and decision-making.
McKinsey put a report in 2019 analysis finds that companies in the top quartile for gender diversity on executive teams were 25 percent more likely to have above-average profitability than companies in the fourth quartile—up from 21 percent in 2017 and 15 percent in 2014 (Exhibit 1) 2
To truly advance gender equality, we must elevate and promote women’s voices in all aspects of life. This requires dismantling existing structures that hinder women’s participation and amplifying their contributions. It’s not just about achieving equality but recognizing the inherent value that women bring to the table. Feminism is not merely a sentiment but a call to action—a commitment to uplifting women and advocating for their rights and recognition. By embracing diversity, empowering women, and promoting inclusivity, Lets create a more equitable and prosperous future for all.
